About SoMaSHTe

`Poor are those whose voice unheard’

Established in 2005, SoMaSHTe-Society for Media and Suitable Human-communication Techniques works for spearheading media and communications for socio-economic development. Activities of SoMaSHTe are aiming to increase peoples’ participation in the print and electronic media and frontier communication initiatives including ICT to enable people access to knowledge and information. SoMaSHTe is a registered Trustee under the Registration Act of 1908.

Upholding rights and dignity of people in all sections of the society is one of the key aspire of SoMaSHTe. To meet this aspiration SoMaSHTe wish to work with like-minded local and international development partners and build working network with rights focused and development organizations in home and abroad in the field of media and communications, capacity building, research, and advocacy.

Project Name

Media Advocacy to Contribute to Pro Poor Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Bangladesh

Project Location

20 selected districts and 4 selected divisions in Bangladesh.

General Objective

To increase the capacity of the national and local media to engage in national decision-making processes related to climate change and to influence policies.

Specific Objective

  • To increase the capacity of the local and national media in tracking climate finance and on mitigation/low carbon development in Bangladesh
  • To raise the voice and promote participation of Non State Actors in ensuring transparency and accountability in utilization of climate fund in line with national climate adaptation plan
  • To establish at least an informal network of journalists working on climate change and establish a linkage between them and the CSRL members working in respective districts
Expected Output

  • Increased capacity of at least 30 media professionals in each district under the project on tracking climate finance in Bangladesh
  • Increased capacity of at least 25 media professionals in each workshop at national and divisional level on mitigation/low carbon development
  • Non State Actors voice raised and participation promoted in ensuring transparency and accountability in utilization of climate fund in line with national climate adaptation plan
  • An informal network of journalists working on climate change has been formed and a linkage between them and the CSRL members working in respective districts has been established

Audience and beneficiaries

Working journalists of both print and broadcast media and academia and students of the journalism department/potential journalists will be the primary beneficiary of the guidebook.

Goal

Increase quality and quantity of coverage on agriculture in both print and electronic media by enhancing knowledge and skill of journalists and would be journalists on agriculture journalism.

Objectives

  • Develop the content of a guidebook on Agricultural Journalism
  • Publish & distribute the guidebook on Agricultural Journalism
  • Take necessary measures to ensure wide acceptability of the guidebook by the media community and academia.
Major Activities

  • Select & form a pool of authors and advisory panel, expert panel for developing the content and review of the guidebook
  • Conduct a rapid needs assessment: desk study, focus group discussion and in-depth interview
  • Develop and finalize the guidebook
  • Organize promotional activities: publish advertisement in print media, develop, print and distribute poster, publish book review in the media etc.
